1. What is the MHS SRA VPN?
The MHS SRA Virtual Private Network (VPN) is a service that allows you to access the MHS Physicians Home Page across the public Internet in a secure fashion. You must have a computer, valid access to any Internet Service Provider (ISP) (AOL 6.0 will not work), and have a copy of the Nortel Extranet Client installed and properly configured on your system. The software is easy to install and use. Simply follow the instructions on the Software Installation page of this web site. You will authenticate with our VPN server and then have easy access to the Physicians Home Page and the applications available.

2. What do I need to connect to the MHS SRA VPN?
You will need either your laptop (if you are a traveler), or your home computer configured with the Nortel Extranet Software. You will also require a valid account with any Internet Service Provider (ISP). The @Home Service (Cable Modems), ADSL (Various Flavors), and various Dial-up Providers (56k or less: XO, Pac Bell, MSN, etc) are all examples of ISPs.

3. Installing Extranet Access Client on Windows 95

Certain Windows 95 systems require the Winsock update and the Dial-up Networking patch for PPTP and IPsec tunneling. To verify your version, choose Start, Settings, Control Panel, System.  Windows 95 versions 950 and 950A require the Microsoft Winsock patch; version 950B does not require the patch.

msdun13.exe – The Microsoft Windows 95 Dial-up Networking software patch, Version 1.3, for US and Canada only. This software patch includes the Winsock software patch.  msdun13.exe is a security patch that fixes several Win95 security issues related to PPTP and VPN.  The Extranet Access Client will not install without it for versions before 950B.

There are two options (Option #1 is the easiest, Option #2 if you have previously tried the Extranet Access Client install :

Option 1. Download and install MSDUN13.exe prior to installing the Nortel VPN client. Click the Download button at the top of the page.  Click the Microsoft DUN (MSNDUN13.exe for Windows 95 users link and then OK to Save this program to disk. You will be prompted to enter the username/password from the NEW ACCOUNT EMAIL sent to you by the MHS SRA Help Desk.  Using the Save AS Window, download the MSNDUN13.exe file to  a pre-existing temporary folder such as c: \My Documents\Temp.  The download can take a s little as a minute on a cable connection or up to 30 minutes on a 28.8 modem.  When the download file is complete, run the file.  Say yes to accept the license agreement.  After installing MSDUN13.exe you will be prompted to restart Windows95. After restarting Windows95 you can then return to Step 2 to download the Extranet Access Client .

Option 2. Have the users download MSDUN13 to an existing and easy folder to remember, such as C:\My Documents\Downloads.

In Step 3. of the Software Installation, when the Extranet Access Client installation wizard prompts for the location for it to find MSDUN1.3 the user can either browse to or type the path to C:\My Documents\Downloads. Once the Nortel client installation wizard knows where to find MSDUN13.exe it happily runs the executable, prompts for the Windows restart, then resumes it's own installation.

As previously reported by users, by default the Nortel client installation wizard stubbornly tries to find MSDUN13.exe on the CD-ROM drive, either D: or E: depending on the specific PC.

--------------------------------------

MSDUN13.exe extracts and copies about 8 files, primarily .dll and .inf files to the \windows\system subdirectory. It does not appear to perform any registry edits.  It takes less than a minute to run MSDUN13.exe.

4. Do I plug my computer into the phone jack similar to the old RAS?
You must connect to your ISP in the normal fashion. If you use your dial-up modem to connect to a provider, then you will need to connect first before connecting to the VPN. If you are permanently connected to the Internet (i.e./ via cable modem), then you simply need to launch the Nortel Extranet Software.

5. How do I install the Extranet Client Software?
Please reference the Software Installation page on this web site.

6. How do I uninstall the Extranet Client Software?
The Extranet Client Software can be removed via the Uninstall Icon in the Nortel Directory of your Start Menu, or by opening your Control Panel (START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL) and double-clicking on the Add / Remove Programs Icon and selecting the Nortel Extranet Client Software.

7. Will my Extranet Client run under Windows 2000/ XP?
Yes, Windows 2000 is now supported in the 2.62 and above versions of the client.

Windows XP is now supported in the 4.10 and above version of the client.

8. What is the Centrino (Pentium M) bug?
On certain computers that have the new Intel Centrino chipset (Pentium M), installation of the Nortel Extranet access client will casuse the computer to crash.

Nortel has provided a fix. It is extremely important to evaluate whether to apply the fix before installation of the Nortel Extranet Client. Nortel Customer Support Bulletin on the Centrino Bug with Extranet Client Software?

9. How can I tell what my transfer stats are?
While your VPN session is active, double-click on the Extranet Icon (which is by your clock). You will see something like this:

10. Do I need to upgrade my client from eac262d to eac370d or eac415d?

If your Extranet Access Client does not appear to have problems then there is no reason to upgrade at this time.

The newer clients fixes problems seen by cable subscribers (Cox) running Windows 9x where email or the Netscape browser stops working after installing the Extranet Access Client and connecting to the MHS VPN.  The new client will allow the Netscape browser to work with out errors after disconnecting the Extranet Access Client from the MHS vpn.

If you choose to upgrade make sure you have the download username and password, your vpn username and password and the IP address for step 4, 8 in the Software Instructions.  Perform step 6. above in these VPN FAQ in place of step 1 of the Software Installation instructions.

Windows XP users will need to install eac415d.
